Skater Tots Training Program

Skater Tots is our 21-week training program for adults 18 and older who want to learn flat-track roller derby. No experience necessary—we'll teach you everything from skating basics to full-contact gameplay.

Phase 1

Skating Basics

Directional skating, starts, stops, jumping, falls recovery, and an introduction to WFTDA rules. Seven weeks of building your foundation.

Phase 2

Contact Basics

Transitions, stopping power, track awareness, checking techniques, blocking mechanics, and deeper rules knowledge. Seven weeks of leveling up.

Phase 3

Derby Basics

Full gameplay application including blocker and jammer roles, wall formations, pack strategy, and tight skating formations. Seven weeks of becoming a derby player.

Eligibility

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Able to stand on skates (assistance available during early sessions)
  • WFTDA insurance: $75/year
  • Monthly dues: $35
  • Attend at least 50% of practices
  • Participate in one scrimmage as a non-skating official
  • Participate in one scrimmage as a skating official before competitive eligibility

Required Gear

  • Quad roller skates (heeled or flat)
  • Knee and elbow pads with hard caps
  • Wrist guards with hard palm splint
  • Multi-sport or hockey helmet
  • Mouthguard (Sisu, Battle, or Shock Doctor recommended)

Volunteer with Us

Don't skate? No problem. Burning River relies on dedicated volunteers to host and run bouts. We welcome volunteers of all experience levels for game day operations, non-skating official positions, and community events. As a nonprofit, we're happy to sign off on volunteer hours.
